There’s a boom of craft breweries sweeping the country, as beer drinkers explore unique flavours from smaller brewers instead of beverages from the corporate giants. Typically only producing small batch beer compared to the large corporate operators, a micro, or craft, brewery is generally characterised by their emphasis on flavour, quality and brewing technique. From Bright to Bruny Island, Robe to Rockhampton, Tallebudgera to Torquay, consumers are devouring craft beer and the stories that go along with them, as people want to know more about the products they buy.

Good Beer Week

As if beer wasn’t good for any ol’ day, Good Beer Week is happening right now all over Melbourne and Victoria, with lager-loving people enjoying festivities around all-things-golden-ale. According to their website, many of the world’s leading craft brewers regard Good Beer Week as “the best beer week in the world.” Between now and May 19th 2019, you can check out their website for all the activities designed to tempt the tastebuds of beer lovers, beer geeks, foodies and even a beer school.

The great news is, Surf Coast locals and visitors don’t need to go to the big smoke to enjoy some seriously good craft beers, with two local breweries getting in on the action this week…

Blackman’s Brewery

Kicking off the festival last weekend was a proud local in our own backyard called Blackman’s Brewery, on Bell St Torquay. Quite simply, they love good beer, and they invited punters to come and drink beer straight from the Blackman’s tanks and hang out with the brewing team.

Local music legends played live tunes to a lively crowd, enjoying the aromas of paella with a variety of beer flavours and styles that resulted in a great day for everyone. Their catchcry of ‘fresh is best’ celebrates the fact that they make their beers with the best quality ingredients, leaving them in the tank for the right amount of time to develop their flavours.

Blackman’s Brewery is located only 500 metres from the beach in Torquay. With an epic beer garden outside and a cosy, relaxed atmosphere inside, beer loving legends will let the good times roll, all year round. It’s a great place to catch up with your friends and family and enjoy the share-style, grazing menu that works perfectly with, you guessed it, beer.

Bells Beach Brewing

Our other favourite local spot to sip on brews made close to home, is the newly opened Bells Beach Brewing in Baines Crescent, Torquay. They’re hosting a cracking afternoon of their freshest brews, the best slow cooked American barbecue around, live music and surf films on the big screen on Saturday 18th May, from noon-11pm. A visit to the Surf Coast’s newest brewery will reveal their own surf-inspired beers, with names like Point Addis Pale Ale, Southside Saison, Bomboras Blonde, Impossible Point ALE (IPA), and Steps Stout to quench your thirst and have you reminiscing about epic surf sessions you’ve had at these breaks.

With a catchphrase that says ‘where thirst follows surf’, who are we to argue? We know where we’re headed after a solid winter surf, and we’re only too happy to lighten their loaded shelves.

Drawing inspiration from the adventurous lives they lead on the beautiful Surf Coast, either at the beach, in the water or mountain biking in the surrounding countryside, they play hard and work hard. These guys know beer, having travelled the world extensively, sampling beers in every locale, to arrive at their own range of flavours that blend in as many ingredients from Australia, New Zealand and across the globe.

To see Bells Beach Brewing’s range of beers, click here, or visit their self-described ‘Beer Kingdom’ which offers a great atmosphere to come together with friends over cold ales.

So, if you’re on the Surf Coast with a thirst for an amber beverage, answer that craving with a cold one from one of these local beer houses, and experience the micro-brewery movement for yourself. Beer is no longer just about refreshment, and in fact can now be associated with showcasing complex elements like those seen in the appreciation of coffee, wine and food. The key ingredients of hops, malt and yeast are being paired with an extraordinary array of flavours and techniques that push boundaries, opening up the conversation, storylines and personality of beer to a growing customer base that now enjoy beer more, or, in some cases, for the very first time.

We look forward to ‘tapping in’ (pardon the pun) to our local brewery venues to try out all of their varieties… all in the name of supporting local businesses and improving our local knowledge.

Cheers 😉
