Living a Summer on our Surf Coast

Relaxing on the Surf Coast after the busy Christmas and New Year period offers a multitude of options to locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re staying in a house by the sea, a luxurious hotel room, or enjoying a stint of camping in the area, we encourage everyone to try a new activity this summer. First time visitors, regular holidaymakers, or local residents, check out our tips for things you can see, do and explore to make this summer your most memorable one yet!

The official start of the Great Ocean Road, Torquay is Victoria’s surfing and beach worship capital. Dose up on surf culture and heritage while you’re in Torquay, the home of Bells Beach and birthplace of iconic brands Rip Curl and Quiksilver. Surf City Plaza is a shopping precinct devoted to the sport, so stock up on the latest gear or bag yourself a bargain from the Baines Crescent Surf Seconds Outlets. While you’re there, capture the spirit of surf culture with a visit to the Surf World Surfing Museum with pictures and hands-on displays.

Surf World Torquay

Don’t normally get in the ocean? Hire a wetsuit from Torquay Surf Academy, or better still, book a surf lesson and feel the rush enjoyed by local surfers! Experienced surfers will love exploring a huge variety of beach and reef breaks, and bigger swells, from Point Impossible to Bells Beach, while families flock to the protected beaches of Cosy Corner, Fisherman’s Beach and Point Addis. If you’re staying on the coast for a while, you could enrol the kids in Vicswim, Nippers or Surf Groms to improve their swimming, surfing and ocean skills.

It’s the best time of year to get out and be active, and we have so many outdoor locations to enjoy with friends. Torquay, Jan Juc and Bellbrae boast many beautiful green corridors, parks and ovals to stroll, run, ride and play. Grab a footy, cricket set, kite or frisbee and enjoy our open spaces. Hire a tennis court, shoot some hoops or hone your skateboarding skills at the Djila Tjarri Skate Park.

Bike and walking tracks on the Surf Coast

Stroll along sandy beaches beneath towering cliffs or take fine views of the coast from vantage points along the Surf Coast Walk. Visit the nature reserves, walk the lengths of our beaches, scan the shoreline for seaglass and shells, play beach cricket, volleyball, baseball, and have sandcastle-making competitions… the list is endless for activities that make memories for a lifetime.

After all that physical activity, treat the crew to a visit to the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie for indulgent choccy galore. Or enjoy fresh berry picking at local PYO farms, Surf Coast Strawberry Fields or Raven’s Creek Berry Farm, Moriac. Looking for a great twilight outing? Head to the Nightjar Market every Thursday 4-10pm in January, to immerse yourself in the magical atmosphere of music, roving performers, buskers and food galore!

Restaurants and cafes in Torquay

While at it’s busiest in the hot summer months, Torquay is a year-round destination. We’re all about ‘sharing the love’, and we have some fave local hangs. If you’re beach side near the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club check out the many dining options down bustling Bell Street, or if you’re at Torquay Front Beach there are some fantastic cafes and eateries along the Esplanade, and of course Surf City Plaza for the best shopping.
